Online Self-Paced | Asynchronous

Transform lived experience into meaningful support for individuals navigating the criminal justice system, behavioral health challenges, recovery, and community reentry.

About the Course

The Peer Services for Justice-Involved Individuals course is a specialized training designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and practical application of peer support when working with individuals who have experience with the criminal justice system.

Peer support can play a critical role at every stage of justice involvement—from initial contact with law enforcement and court proceedings to incarceration, probation, parole, reentry, and successful reintegration into the community. Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists are uniquely positioned to build trust, inspire hope, model recovery, connect individuals to resources, and help reduce barriers that can contribute to continued justice system involvement.

Grounded in person-centered, strengths-based, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed practices, this course prepares participants to support individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges while navigating the complex realities of the criminal justice system.

Through the appropriate use of lived experience, Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists can serve as credible role models who demonstrate that recovery, successful reentry, personal growth, and a life beyond incarceration are possible.

The Power of Lived Experience

Research highlighted in the curriculum emphasizes the importance of lived experience, successful reentry, and an understanding of trauma within peer relationships.

For individuals involved in the criminal justice system, receiving support from someone who understands aspects of that experience can create a level of connection, credibility, hope, and trust that traditional services alone may not provide.

The goal is not simply to help someone navigate a system—it is to support people in building the skills, relationships, resources, confidence, and recovery capital needed to create a meaningful life in their community.
